Birthday Party Extraordinaire Recently the elite in St. Pete celebrated President Putin`s 55th birthday, which was on October 7th. From the city budget about $US 10 million was set aside for the most amazing event in Russia since the days of Tsardom!..>>>Readers Comments (0) Editorial On the night of Saturday June 23rd 2007 anyone evaluating the cities of the world, based on merriment, extravaganza, involvement of the city’s population and fun and laughter would have placed St. Petersburg in first place...>>>Readers Comments (0) Letters To The Editor By Paul Condon As I leave Russia after my first visit here I seek to share with readers some of my impressions. Two places, George Town Penang, Malaysia and Saint-Petersburg here in Russia both have had development stopped for decades and yet are now unique jewels...>>>Readers Comments (0) Letters To The Editor By James Robert Seidel I write regarding the fine article about healing plants written by Marina Vorobjova & Veronica Dobryakova and published in your December 06 issue...>>>Readers Comments (0) Editorial By Elisaveta Gordienko The great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin didn’t really like springtime in Russia. In his poem “Autumn” written in 1833, he says that he feels sick in spring, and that his mind and feelings are troubled by melancholy and weariness. However, it seems to me that Pushkin was too quick to judge spring as he didn’t see it in all its beauty, as we can this year in St. Petersburg!..>>>Readers Comments (0) Letters To The Editor I am a University graduate from England currently spending some time in St Petersburg, a city I have great affection for, having spent nearly five months here in 2005 as part of my University year abroad...>>>Readers Comments (0) Letters To The Editor By James Morrison As a new-ish arrival in St. Petersburg I have only recently become acquainted with your Neva News magazine – and my entire family loves it. We are here for a year while my husband works on a contract, and it is great to have a source of information on the well-known as well as some of the lesser known sights of the city. Initially, we found St. Petersburg a bit daunting, as none of us speak Russian, but in the seven weeks we have been here so far, we have developed a real liking for the city...>>>Readers Comments (0)
Editorial - Why Are We Here? Welcome to this Xmas/New Year issue of Neva News. A time in St. Petersburg of winter, snow (well normally, but not now!), short days, long nights. A time when Russians energetically participate in many festivities. A time when foreigners can share in this atmosphere of renewal...>>>Readers Comments (0) It Is Mathematical Fact: We Are All Related By Editor By simply reviewing the genetic family tree of the present day human race (us Homo sapiens) anyone can see the interrelationship or common ancestry of us all...>>>Readers Comments (0) Letters To The Editor By Asha Peppiatt Where do I start? We strive for correct factual reporting – of getting it right, but being human, this latter goal cannot always be attained...>>>Readers Comments (0) Letters to the Editor By Alex Cambridge, England I have been living in St. Petersburg for the last 8 months, teaching English for one of the language schools in the city centre. How better to celebrate this ethereal white light than at a whirl of festivities and cultural events! During April/May the entire city is alive with festivals, music, opera and dance performances in theatres, parks and courtyards...>>>Readers Comments (0)
Recognising a person from St. Pete By Irina Starobinskaya St. Petersburg is strange: its existence is inexplicable. The initial project by Peter the Great to create this city seemed sure to be unsuccessful (in the middle of a bog and river flat, in a sometimes difficult climate and being surrounded by Sweden; none of these provided a text book location for the planned capital of Russia). It exists however. Perhaps akin to an experienced but tired Casanova, it today unintentionally enchants and fascinates everyone stepping on its now solid soil...>>>Readers Comments (2)
