Yet he didn’t go in for professional Theatre – “I just didn’t want to live in a state of war that most theatre companies have”, he says. He instead launched an amateur Theatre. His first play was a success but at the same time it predetermined his difficult relationship with the soviet authorities. Interview with Dr. Ludmila A. Verbitskaya, Rector of St. Petersburg State University Professor L. A. Verbitskaya was elected Rector (which is the head of University) and took office in April 1994. She was the first woman rector in the history of St. Petersburg State University. In 2004 she was re-elected Rector of St. Petersburg State University for the third time. Ludmila Verbitskaya was born in the city of Leningrad. She is, herself, a graduate of St. Petersburg University, having received her first degree from Leningrad State University in 1958 in Russian Language and Literature.
